Living
Shade takes many forms including:
- Provision of seating in existing shaded areas.
- Tree planting.
- Creating living willow structures.
Willow structures are a sustainable and cost effective way of
providing shade in a variety of settings such as schools, community
groups, parks or nurseries for safe outdoor class work or play.
A number of different structures can be made to accommodate
the location, available area and resources. These include:
TREE SEAT
- Figure 1
A woven willow seat around an existing tree.
TUNNEL - Figures 2
This is an excellent resource for play. |
|
DOME - Figure

This can be used as a play facility, 'quiet' area or outdoor
classroom. |

ARBOUR WITH
INTEGRATED SEAT - Figure 4
An open dome with an earth filled willow seat. They are
often the most unsatisfactory willow structures as the
shade caused by the arbour canopy inhibits growth from
the seating weave. It is often far better to place a wooden
bench inside the arbour (see below). |

ARBOUR OVER
EXISTING BENCH - Figure 5
An open dome over a bench.
All structures are made during the dormant period for
willow, which is from late autumn to
early spring when the leaves have dropped. |
